Tips on how to install updux:
The best way is to go in the attic and poke a hole next to
a ceiling joist From inside the house use a dry wall knife (small key hole saw) cut along the joist using the joist as a straight edge.
Use a card board template and mark out the other 3 sides
and cut out dry
Install the plastic grill but remember to put the slot for the slid in damper in a position you can easily slid in.
FAQ frequently asked questions:
Q: Can I install updux in a garage? A: They not approved for a Garage attic because they do not have a 30 minute fire rating. The Automatic Fire damper system is in the unit but not recognized by UL or NFPA.
Q: Your company only offers the standard height Updux, I have a lot of insulation in my attic do I need the extended height Updux? A: We only stock the Standard height 11 5/8 x 11 5/8 x 7 inch tall. We have been installing them since 1990 and never had a problem with attics with a lot of blown or rolled insulation. You may need the extended height model if you are installing them in new construction. But we recommend installing the standard unit after the home is completed. We can special order the extended height model just send us an email to
Q: I have a very shallow attic can I install updux? A: It’s important to have adequate amount of air flow through the attic as well as adequate outlets from the attic to the outside. So if you have vaulted ceiling or a mobile home we do not recommend the use of updux. We have tried the Low profile units in the past the small attic space did not allow enough air flow to work efficiently.
Q: How many Updux do I need? A: We recommend at least 1 per 1000 cfm cooling. Example: 6-7 Updux for a 6500 CFM evaporative cooler. Be sure you have the same amount of venting OUT of you attic to the outdoors. Example: Dormer vents, Bird stop vents, Turbine and Gabel end vents.
Q: I do not have an Evaporative cooler can I use Updux to cut my cooling cost down? A: NO: Updux are for exhausting air in a structure using Evaporative (swamp) cooling. Evap. cooling blows a large volume of OUT SIDE air into a structure. the Updux provide a way for the air to be exhausted.
Q: Can I install an updux on a side wall or a steep sloped ceiling? A: Yes but not recommended, the Barometric lid will not close all the way.
Q: What is the minimum recommended attic height for an updux unit? A: You need plenty of ventilation in the attic but the minimum height for placement is around 18 inches so the Damper has room to open up without hitting the roof.
